About School of Economics & Commerce

The School of Economics & Commerce (KSEC) was established formally on 17th of July 2019 under the Institution of Eminence, Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT), Deemed to be University, which has ranked 1st in ARIIA and has bagged various positions in the national and international rankings. The school is the fast-growing young yet glorious department under the brand of KIIT Deemed to be University.
The School of Economics & Commerce. is inspired by the thought, “Choice and not Chance determines destiny.” It promises to offer Undergraduate, Postgraduate, and Ddoctoral-level programs in the fields of Commerce,  Economics, and other allied fields of relevance. Given its multi-disciplinary composition, KSEC is uniquely positioned to offer many, and varied courses designed to increase students’ understanding, awareness, skill, and employability capability in today’s dynamic society. KSEC  aims to grow and develop mutually beneficial connections among students, faculty, and community partners to reimagine the future economy and society.KSEC aims to promote excellence in teaching and research by nurturing a culture of inquiry-based learning, and grooming students to be morally and socially responsible professionals who are sensitive to the larger societal and economical good. The school revolves around imparting value-based quality education of international standard and imbibing skill for solving real life problems along with inculcating global perspective in attitude and creating leadership qualities and futuristic vision. The school fosters the spirit of entrepreneurship, realization of social responsibilities and instilling the habit of continual in-depth learning and supporting creative abilities and research temperament.

The school is committed to develop and prepare its students with professional skills and life skills to achieve comprehensive life goals. The expert panel of faculty members motivates and moulds the students, in acquiring their achievements. As a further enhancing element of a student career the school has a provision of internships features and field visit for both the UG & PG students as a part of their curriculum so that the students can be exposed to the practical methods of knowledge. The school displays one of the finest interpenetrations of traditional teaching accompanied by modern technologies like Wi-Fi-enabled classroom projectors. Be it an emphasis on collaborative teaching and learning, research and extension activities, interaction with experts, professional skills , or relevant curriculum, every aspect of  the Programme at our school is adequately addressed.

Establishment: The School of Commerce & Economics (KSEC), part of KIIT Deemed to be University, was renamed on May 15, 2024. Initially, it began as KSFH on July 17, 2019.

Leadership

Dr. Praveen Mohanty

Director

Dr. Praveen Mohanty is Professor of Economics and Finance at the School of Economics and Commerce. He brings over two decades of experience spanning financial markets, policy engagement, and academia. Before returning full-time to academic life, he worked with institutions such as ICICI Bank, Srei Infrastructure Finance, Edelweiss Finance, and Aptivaa Consulting, where he was closely involved in risk management, structured finance, infrastructure project finance, and strategic advisory.
Over the years, Dr. Mohanty has developed deep expertise in quantitative credit risk modelling and was among the early professionals working on frameworks to measure and price credit risk in India’s evolving financial system. He also contributed to the development of India’s securitization market including the regulatory framework during its formative phase.
For the past eight years, he was part of KIIT School of Management, where he taught across MBA and executive programmes and engaged actively in curriculum development, research mentoring, and academic leadership. His work consistently seeks to connect economic theory with institutional realities and market practice.

Dr. Mohanty holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Southern California and a master’s degree from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU).

His current research interests include financial inclusion and micro entrepreneurship; the regulatory architecture of the financial sector; environmental economics and climate risk; and corporate bankruptcy.

Dr. Sukanta C. Swain

Dean ( I/C ) & Dean Research

Dr. Sukanta Chandra Swain is a Professor of Economics and Dean (Research) of the School of Economics & Commerce, KIIT Deemed to be University, Bhubaneswar. Before taking up the assignment in the School of Economics & Commerce, he was the Dean, School of Humanities, KIIT Deemed to be University, Bhubaneswar. Prior to joining KIIT, he was with the Chartered Financial Analysts of India as the Professor and Associate Dean.  He has 30 years of teaching experience out of which nine years of experience is in academic administration. He has been successfully guiding research scholars in their doctoral degree and considerably contributing to the intellectual world in the form of publishing research papers, giving keynote/plenary talks, delivering as resource persons, taking up consultancy projects, conducting Workshops, National Seminars/Conferences, FDPs and MDPs. To his credit, he has more than 100 publications in refereed journals and chapters in books, besides having authored/edited five books. He was invited by NAAC-Bangalore to deliver talks on the accreditation process and have discussion with the NAAC officials on how to improve the accreditation process in the eastern region by analyzing the state-wise quality assurance report. He is a NAAC Assessor.

Dr. Saswat Kishore Mishra

Associate  Dean

Dr. Saswat Kishore Mishra, a Ph.D. in Economics from IIT Kharagpur, is an accomplished academic and researcher with over a decade of experience in teaching and research. His expertise spans Rural Development Economics, Environmental and Resource Economics, Climate Change, Energy Economics, and Geopolitical Economy. A recipient of prestigious fellowships from UGC and ICSSR, he leads multiple research projects, including studies on mining, climate resilience, and social inclusion, funded by ICSSR. He has collaborated with government bodies and organizations such as NABARD, NHPC, and the Ministry of Rural Development on consultancy projects. Dr. Mishra has conducted over 20 Management Development Programmes for major organizations like CIL and GAIL. He has presented his work at globally reputed institutions like the World Bank and Erasmus University, with publications in leading journals and frequent Op-Ed contributions to prominent English dailies.
